What these events mean
- Moon near a planet: the Moon passes within 5° of a planet, as seen from Earth's centre (a finger held at arm's length covers about 1°). From Mississauga the gap can differ by a degree or so, and the Moon moves about its own width every hour.
- Two planets close together: a pair within 3° — an easy, striking sight when both are bright.
- Opposition: Mars, Jupiter or Saturn opposite the Sun, so it rises at sunset, is up all night and is at its brightest.
- Greatest elongation: Mercury or Venus at its furthest from the Sun, the best time to see it in the evening (eastern) or morning (western) sky.
“Best seen” is the moment within about a day of the event when every object is at least 10° above the horizon in a dark sky (sun at least 6° down). Calculated with Astronomy Engine; times assume a flat horizon. Add these to your calendar (.ics).
